Real estate transfer tax rates
Most states and or localities charge a tax on the transfer of real estate. This also includes a fee usually for recording the transfer of ownership. Tax rates vary greatly between the states and localities that do charge this fee, ranging from .01% of the purchase price up to 3%.
Many states have exemptions for certain classes of buyers, such as first time buyers, or older people.
